Hey Jill--so about the question about the cameras...The 40D is a more professional version of the rebel line-the body is super durable--I think it shoots more frames per second than the xsi--but the xsi has more megapixels. I think the real key is lenses. I would invest in lenses--they make a huge difference with aperture and everything. Anyways--you really can't go wrong. That probably wasn't any helo :)
Hey Jill--the lens I use the most is the tamron 28-74 f2.8. It's a great lens--and it's only around $350. You can also go with the canon 24-105--awesome lens. Anything in that range is great for portraits/and general uses. Have fun with your new gear
